Study Abroad Trip 2019 - Chile and Argentina Photography Narrative Project
Small Moments to Remember
Going to a foreign country and wanting to take endless pictures of all of the tourist attractions can be exciting. For me, it was the little details I noticed as I was walking the streets of Buenos Aires and El Calafate, hiking up a mountain in Torres Del Paine, or exploring a cemetery the size of a city, when I truly connected with photography and the smaller moments around me. They were the memories with stories behind them that I would be able to take with me as I left this adventure. A picture can be worth a thousand words, but sometimes it’s the little moments that can really capture more than meets the eye.
City Overlook
A cement wall surrounds the lookout on San Cristobal Hill overlooking the vast city of Santiago, Chile. Mountains enclose the city in the distance and thousands of buildings fill in the empty space. After riding the Funicular of Santiago to the top, the view when we walked to this very spot was breathtaking, I wanted to capture it in a way that would show how large the city was from a distance. ― Santiago, Chile. March 9, 2019.
Bridge Locks
A collection of locks link to a walking bridge that overlooks the Mapocho River in Santiago while graffiti colors the hand railing. What I find unique about these locks is that none are the same and the symbolization behind them varies between each person that locked it on the bridge. ― Santiago, Chile. March 9, 2019.
Barbed Wire Fence
On our way to Torres del Paine National Park, we stopped along the road to admire our first look at the mountain range we would be exploring that day. Separating the boundaries of land that farmers owned around the National Park, intricate barbed wire fencing keeps their livestock secured. Here you can see the Torres del Paine mountain range in the distance. ― Torres del Paine, Chile. March 11, 2019.
Windy Rope Bridge
This rope helps supports a wooden bridge suspended with a rope system that crosses Río Pingo at Torres del Paine National Park. As the wind gushed across this fast moving river that day, it made the hike across this bridge pretty challenging since only four people were allowed to be on it at a time. It was one of those cool moments where you look back and say, “I can’t believe we did that..” ― Torres del Paine, Chile. March 11, 2019.
Wooden Panels
These decorative planks of wood siding lines across the Rio Pingo Restaurant & Minimarket and becomes the main focal point among the green trees. I found it to be an interesting, yet simple way to connect to natural elements while creating an ornate composition for a tourist place to eat by the woods. ― Torres del Paine, Chile. March 11, 2019.
Shoreline Rocks
After walking along low lying marshes to a small park overlooking Argentino Lake, we sat down to admire the gentle waves hitting the rocks in the shoreline. These rocks create a barricade that protects the shoreline from corrosion. The glistening from the water mixed with the shadows and texture created from the rocks in the fencing could only be seen the clearest in black and white. ― El Calafate, Argentina. March 12, 2019.
Glacier Close Up
Chunks of ice that have formed, froze, melted, fallen, and crashed over time become the main attraction for what is known as Perito Moreno in Los Glaciares National Park. Part of this vast field of ice that stands taller than a football field is the world's third largest reserve of freshwater. I became lost in the blinding white combined with exuding cold blue hues as we explored the different views of the glacier. ― Los Glaciares National Park, El Calafate, Argentina. March 13, 2019.
Pop Up Shop Pug
This little pug may have stole the show in front of this cute pop up shop, but his owners are the real ones behind the scenes coming all the way from Brazil for about a year now selling little treasures in a bright green Volkswagen van. ― El Calafate, Argentina. March 13, 2019.
Colorful Exhibition
This colorful exterior wall holds an exhibition and cultural events center known as the Centro Cultural Recoleta. It accommodates sculptures and exhibitions, as well as concerts and artistic presentations and workshops of diverse types. The facade of the building is mixed with bold graphic artwork painted on neoclassical architectural elements that creates an interesting modern twist. ― Buenos Aires, Argentina. March 15, 2019.
Cemetery Soldiers
Statues of soldiers face each other in front of a mausoleum for a military general at La Recoleta Cemetery. The cemetery contains many elaborate marble mausoleums, decorated with statues, in a wide variety of architectural styles such as Art Deco, Art Nouveau, Baroque, and Neo-Gothic. With over 4,600 graves that spans 14 acres, it is the burial site of Argentina’s most famous figures such as journalists, presidents, soldiers, and more. ― Buenos Aires, Argentina. March 15, 2019.
Converted Theatre Bookstore
Shelves filled with books line around the three story balconies lit up by lights in this 100- year-old Grand Splendid Theater built in 1919 that was transformed into El Ateneo Grand Splendid bookstore in 2000. It currently welcomes over one million book lovers each year. ― Buenos Aires, Argentina. March 15, 2019.
Boat Crane
Walking along the river called Rio Darsena Sur, we came across large boat cranes that make up the primary maritime port in Argentina. This crane was along the pathway so I was able to look up from underneath it, looking at the structure of it from a different perspective. ― Buenos Aires, Argentina. March 15, 2019.
